There are places you really don’t want to miss when traveling to Costa Rica. We strongly believe that sharing is caring, so here’s our favorite top 5 destinations after scouting around the country for over a decade.

Arenal: This is the adventure center of the country. Strategically located 3-hr drive from either the LIR or the SJO international airports you can go as active as you want to. Why? Three elements combined together to make it a must stop:

1) The iconic volcano

2) The rainforest with its lush flora and fauna, and

3) The lake and the hot springs — need anything else to have some fun?

Manuel Antonio

Manuel Antonio: animal lover? This is the place to go. Jungle and beach mix together making this beach the most famous and visited in the country.

Monkeys, sloths, coatis and iguanas are just some of the commonly seen everywhere.

San Gerardo de Dota San Gerardo de Dota: This small town is set in valley up in the high mountains of the country. It has a VERY similar habitat to Monteverde surrounded by forest and great wildlife, being the Quetzal the most famous. What people don’t know is that it’s easier to spot some birds here than in Monteverde – so don’t be afraid to get off-the-beaten path!

Tamarindo Beach

Tamarindo: Is one of the most beautiful beaches in Guanacaste with warm blue water, amazing sunsets, perfect for surfers, families and for those who are looking for some fun, the night life is great! There is so much to do: from adventure to relaxation tours and its unique wildlife would make it the perfect destination for every kind of traveler.

Puerto Viejo

Puerto Viejo / Cahuita: Both villages located on the Caribbean coast, they’re famous for their beaches, exhuberant vegetation, laid-back lyfestyle influenced by raggae, coconuts and the rasta culture. Two national parks must be visited as well as day trips to a couple of few indigenous communities still keep their tradition in the country.
